5 Eye-care Tips You Can’t Miss on World Sight Day 2019

It is both shocking and sad to know that in 2007, over 15 million Indians were blind. But what is more horrifying is the fact that out of these, 75% of the cases could have been avoided only if there were enough number of optometrists in the nation.
This World Sight Day, pledge to take eye tests regularly to avoid possible eye disorders. Pay more attention towards your daily habits that might gradually lead to serious eye conditions. Along with it, follow a basic eye-care regime regularly to maintain good eyesight.

1. Eat Well:

Our plate defines our eye health. A diet rich in antioxidants like vitamin C and E, nutrients such as Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin A, lutein, zinc and zeaxanthin are vital to maintain eye health. A balanced consumption of these nutrient’s intake can counter off any vision related problems like macular degeneration and cataracts.
So, what should your diet include?

  • 5 servings of fruits and green vegetables daily.
  • Include citrus fruits like lemons, oranges and grapes.
  • Protein sources such as eggs, almonds, and milk.
  • Salmon, Oyster and oily fishes.

2. Clean your Hands:

Always clean your hands before making any contact with the eyes. Presence of germs and bacteria in hands can cause serious eye infections, like bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye). In case you are a contact lens wearer, it becomes more important for you to wash hands and wipe them before putting on or off your eye lens.

3. Eye Exercises:

A habit of regular exercise will improve the blood circulation in your eyes resulting in better oxygen levels and a reduction in toxins. Here are some simple eye exercises to maintain your eyesight:

  • Rub your palms. Place them over your eyelids for a couple of minutes. Repeat 2-3 times a day.
  • Blink your eyes 10-15 times very quickly. Close them and relax for a while.
  • Focus on an item/thing kept a few feet away from you. Now shift the focus on a nearby thing like your hands. Shift the focus to and fro several times in this manner. Make sure both the things are in front of you in a same line.
  • With your head straight, look left as extreme as possible. Now slowly shift your view to extreme right without moving your head. Repeat a few times daily. This will make your eye muscles more active.

It might surprise you to know that holding eyes in one position for too long get them sore. So, take a break and relax your eye muscles.

4. Quit Smoking:

Your lungs are not the only body part affected by smoking. Here is another reason to quit smoking as it is proven to cause serious damage to your optic nerve. It exposes your eyes to high levels of oxidative stress. So, quit smoking to lower your chances of suffering from vision impairments.

5. And the most obvious one, Reduce Screen Time:

Not only obvious, it is quite important as well. The time when you are not sleeping or bathing, you are glued to some screen. Our work-hours include laptop and self-time has got a smart phone. So, reduce your screen time by taking breaks during office work and limit your smart phone usage as well.

It will also increase your productivity by eliminating headaches caused due to eyesight problems. You may not know that eye workout even lower glaucoma risks. Also, make sure to keep blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and diabetes under check as these may also cause serious eye issues resulting in vision impairment.
